Birkbeck Engineering: Domestic sector
Domestic Sewage Treatment Plants
We specialise in installation and maintenance of domestic sewage treatment plants, with wastewater becoming more complex to treat in terms of greater flows and containing a greater range of pollutants, if your septic tank is outdated, it may not be able to handle the increased load and may even be contributing to environmental pollution.
Septic tanks laws changed on the 1st of January 2020. It is now illegal to allow wastewater to drain directly into a river, stream or pond. New septic tanks and sewage treatment plants must comply with
BS EN 12566-3 certification and
20:30:20 (BOD:SS:NH3) ‘effluent standard’ this is the standard EA requires.
Attenuation / Soakaway systems
Rainwater run-off from buildings and hard standing has become a huge issue which has to be addressed before planning is granted. To comply it is often necessary to attenuate rainwater at roof level or below ground.
A water attenuation system forms part of a Sustainable Drainage System (SuDS). It directs excess rainwater from the drainage system on buildings and built infrastructure such as roads in to a attenuation system.
Attenuation system is designed to temporarily store storm water for a period of time, to then release back into a watercourse or sewer network.
Lead Pipe Replacement
If your home was built before 1970, there’s a high chance it will have a lead water pipes. Today it is widely recognised that exposure to lead should be minimised for health reasons.
The lead replacement scheme came into practice to help reduce the amount of lead content in our drinking water by replacing old lead pipes for MDPE.
Many water suppliers already have programs in place to replace any lead pipes they find on their own network, However it is the responsibility of the home owner to replace the lead pipes within the boundary of the property.
